Can I use my NDIS funding for a cleaner?

If you have a Core budget, and you meet the conditions explained below, then yes!

You may be able to use your NDIS funding for a cleaner if you meet the following criteria:

  • Your disability prevents you from being able to undertake the cleaning tasks yourself.
  • The cleaner will be performing essential house cleaning activities.

If you meet the above criteria, below are some additional conditions to note:

  • If you live with other people, the NDIS won’t usually fund a cleaner to clean the whole house. The NDIS will fund a cleaner to clean your room/living space but expect the rest of the house to be cleaned by the other resident/s.
  • The NDIS won’t pay for specialist cleaning services that every Australian needs to engage every now and again. This includes vacate bond cleans, carpet cleaning, a plumber etc.
  • The NDIS is unlikely to fund a cleaner for young children as it’s not considered reasonable and necessary for young children to clean the home.

Invoicing

A cleaner can use the following line item when invoicing:

01_020_0120_1_1 House Cleaning and Other Household Activities

If you have sole or substantial responsibility for your home, the following line item can be used for a worker to assist you with housework and/or to develop skills to maintain your home:

01_004_0107_1_1 Assistance with Personal Domestic Activities

Plan-managed participants: Your providers cannot invoice for more than the hourly price limit set by the NDIS. For current price limits visit the NDIS Price Guide.

What if I want to use a provider that charges a higher hourly rate than the NDIS price limit?

An invoice can be sent to your plan manager with the hourly rate at the price limit set by the NDIS. You can then pay the additional amount to your provider directly with your own money.

Does the provider need to be NDIS registered?

If plan-managed or self-managed, no. They just need to have an ABN. NDIA-managed participants can only use providers that are NDIS registered.
